Shetland Young People's Panel

Big Lottery Young People’s Panel for Shetland

We are very proud of the achievements of our young people's panellists who have been such splendid ambassadors of volunteering for young people.  They have all been awarded Certificates in Participative Democracy (equivalent to a module at SCQF level IV) for their portfolio work based on their experience as panel members.  They have also as panellists:

  • given presentations at the Volunteers Week volunteers' lunch
  • contributed to Young Scot's publication, The Big Change
  • volunteered on the YouthLink Scotland Grant Committee to help allocate funding for the Scottish Government's Youth Opportunities Fund
  • as well as making recommendations on two local projects for the Big Lottery Young People's Fund

Other highlights of the two years were:

  • teambuilding abseiling day (see photos)
  • pre-launch visit to the new Shetland Museum and Archives
  • consultation with two new SIC Councillors
  • learning about the Scottish Youth Parliament from local rep
  • as well as training

The panel has sadly now finished, but here's a reminder of what it was about:

The Big Lottery Fund
The Big Lottery Fund is one of the National Lottery Distributors and gives out half of all the funds made available to the good causes by the National Lottery.  Find out more about the Big Lottery Fund.

The Young People’s Fund
The Young People’s Fund was a grants programme that closed to applications at the end of August 2007.

The Young People’s Panel
The Volunteer Centre in each local authority area in Scotland set up a local Young People’s Panel.  The Panel looked at all the local applications that could be funded through the grants programme and made recommendations based on the needs and demands of local young people. Those recommendations were then considered by the National Committee who decided which ones to spend the money on.

What Happened in Shetland?
In Shetland the Young People’s Panel members were aged between 11 and 27 (25 at the start of the programme) and their involvement was on a voluntary basis. The volunteers on the Young People's Panel Shetland met every two months.  November 2007 marked the date of the final meeting, with a final celebration event in December 2007.
